Capital City State Trail
The Capital City State Trail is a well-used bike path connecting much of the Madison metro area. The trail is intended to be a link between the Military Ridge State Trail, Badger State Trail, and eventually the Glacial Drumlin State Trail. The scenic path crosses rural, suburban, and urban landscapes over 17 miles in Madison and Fitchburg. The trail is popular with both visitors and commuters.
In one notable 9-mile segment, the trail navigates the picturesque marshes, creeks, and lakes of Capital Springs State Recreation Area. The path also journeys through Nevin Springs Fish and Wildlife Area, Cinque Terre Conservancy, and several city parks. Outstanding views of nature abound in all these areas.
The trail’s paved surface is in good condition, and the route varies in elevation. While hills are moderate in height, they may be daunting for some casual cyclists. The path is divided into lanes, and trail-goers are asked to stay to the right. Bicycle self-service stations, park benches, and water fountains are located throughout the route.
In Fitchburg, main trailheads are located at Dawley Bike Hub and Syene Road. In Madison, trailheads are found near William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park, and at Olin and Olbrich Parks. Camping is available at William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park. As it winds through Madison, the Capital City State Trail connects with over a half dozen other bike trails, allowing cyclists to journey for many miles on bike paths.
Cyclists are encouraged to wear bright fluorescent clothing and use headlights and taillights on the Capital City State Trail. The trail crosses busy roads, travels through urban Madison, and sees heavy traffic on weekends. Additionally, there are several railroad intersections along the route. Cyclists should be cautious when crossing tracks, as some of the tracks run diagonally to the path, and bike tires may slip on the rail grooves.
A state trail pass is required for anyone 16 years and older who bikes, skates, or roller skates on the trail between Verona Frontage Road and Nob Hill Road. The fee is $5 daily, or $25 annually. Passes are available at self-service pay stations on the trail and at the Lussier Family Heritage Center. Cyclists should follow all posted rules and regulations while biking the Capital City State Trail. In general, the path provides a wonderful opportunity to explore Madison and the surrounding area.
